Ninedroid troubleshooting guide
Fixes for the pairing, connection and permission issues riders run into most often.
Last updated: June 23, 2026This guide covers every issue we've been able to reproduce and confirm a fix for while testing the Ninedroid app against a physical first-generation Ninebot unit. If your problem isn't listed here, our Contact Us page is the fastest way to reach us directly.
1. Ninedroid can't find my scooter (pairing fails)
This is the single most common issue, and in almost every case it traces back to one of four causes rather than a fault in the app itself:
- Bluetooth is off on one side. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled both in your phone's quick settings and on the scooter itself — most Ninebot units need to be powered on and "awake" (not in deep sleep) to broadcast their Bluetooth signal.
- Location permission hasn't been granted. Since Android 6.0, any app that scans for Bluetooth devices — including Ninedroid — must have location permission granted, even though it isn't using GPS. Open Settings → Apps → Ninedroid → Permissions and confirm Location (or "Nearby devices" on Android 12+) is set to Allow.
- You're out of range or there's interference. Bluetooth Classic pairing on these older Ninebot units typically has a reliable range of around 5 meters. Move closer, and try to keep the phone away from other 2.4GHz sources like Wi-Fi routers during the initial pairing handshake.
- The scooter is already paired to another phone. Some legacy Ninebot firmware only maintains one active Bluetooth session at a time. If a second phone was recently paired, forget the device on that phone first.
2. The app connects, then disconnects a few seconds later
A connection that establishes and then drops almost immediately is a classic sign of Bluetooth contention — something else on your phone is competing for the same radio. In our testing, the most frequent culprits were:
- A newer Segway-Ninebot app left running in the background, still attempting its own connection to the same scooter
- Bluetooth audio devices (earbuds, car systems) that were connected at the same time
- Battery optimization settings killing Ninedroid's background process moments after connection — check Settings → Battery → Battery optimization and set Ninedroid to "Not optimized" or "Unrestricted"
3. Dashboard shows 0 for everything
Seeing 0 MPH, 0 for the odometer, and no battery reading right after pairing does not necessarily mean something is broken. The Bluetooth link and the live telemetry stream are two separate steps: the connection can succeed a second or two before the scooter starts actually transmitting live values. Wait 5–10 seconds, or start riding briefly, and the gauges should populate. If values stay at zero for longer than 30 seconds while the scooter is clearly powered and moving, disconnect and re-pair.
4. Permission prompts keep reappearing
If Ninedroid asks for Bluetooth or location permission every time it opens instead of remembering your choice, this is typically an Android system setting rather than an app bug — some manufacturers' custom Android skins (certain Xiaomi, Huawei and Oppo builds) reset "one-time" permissions after the app is closed. Go to the app's permission screen and set each permission to "Allow all the time" or the equivalent persistent option rather than "Allow only this time."
5. Firmware version shown in the app looks wrong or outdated
The Detail Info screen reads the firmware version directly from the scooter over Bluetooth at the moment you connect — it is not cached from a previous session. If the version looks outdated, disconnect, power-cycle the scooter completely, and reconnect. If it's still showing an old version after that, the scooter's firmware genuinely hasn't been updated and this is a hardware-side issue outside the app's control.
6. Installation is blocked ("app not installed" or similar)
Since Ninedroid is installed outside the Play Store, Android blocks the install by default until you explicitly allow it. If installation fails outright:
- Confirm you allowed "install unknown apps" for the browser or file manager you used to download the file (Settings → Apps → Special access → Install unknown apps)
- Make sure the downloaded file wasn't partially downloaded — check that its size matches approximately 6.0 MB
- If you have an older version of Ninedroid already installed, try uninstalling it first, then installing the new APK fresh
Still stuck?
If none of the above resolves your issue, email us at contact@ninedroid.com with your phone model, Android version, and a short description of what happens — we test reported issues against physical hardware wherever possible.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't Ninedroid find my Ninebot scooter during pairing?
This is almost always a Bluetooth or permissions problem rather than an app fault. Confirm Bluetooth is on for both devices, the scooter is powered on and within range, and Ninedroid has location permission granted.
Ninedroid connects but disconnects again within seconds — why?
Usually caused by another app or device holding the Bluetooth connection. Close other Bluetooth-connected apps and try again.
The dashboard shows 0 for speed, battery and mileage. Is this a bug?
Not necessarily — it usually means the connection succeeded but live data hasn't arrived yet. Wait a few seconds or start riding.
I get a permissions error when opening Ninedroid for the first time. What should I do?
Manually enable Bluetooth, Nearby Devices/Location, and Storage permissions from your phone's App Settings, then restart the app.
Does Ninedroid work on Android 5.0 and above?
Yes — version 2.1.6 specifically improves compatibility with Android 5.0 and resolves earlier network connection issues.
